Installation instructions for FSX / P3Dv3.2 / P3D v4.5 / P3D v5.1

1.
Unzip the zip file that you downloaded from the Varsity Webpage relevant to your flight simulator software.

2.
The zip file contains the following folders:
Documentation
Effects
Images
Liveries
Maps
navigation
Scenery
Sim Objects
Sound

3.
Sound:
Copy the contents of the sound folder and paste them into the sound folder of your simulator

4.
Sim Objects:
We have provided 2 freeware Sim Objects for your simulator which are from Flight Replicas.
Install both into your Sim Objects/Airplanes folder

5.
Navigation:
Within the navigation folder are flight plans for use by Little Navmap. Place the .pln file(s) into the folder where you keep your flight plan files.
There are also some images giving an overview of the routes to the drop zones.

6.
Maps:
Within the maps folder are images illustrating the airfields used and the routes taken for Varsity. 11 airfields in England and 12 in France. 4 of those in France were used for paratroopers, which is the element we will be focussed on. These are LFOR Chartres (XPlane), XB54 Achiet (FSX/P3d 3), LFXM Mourmelon (P3D v4.5) and XA79 Prones (P3D v5.1).
All routes are at 2000' 140 knots except that for XA79 which is at 2500'.

7.
Liveries:
This folder contains authentic liveries of the 316th Troop Carrier Group.
Copy the 3 folders into the folder of either your Manfred Jahn v3.14 or v3.16 aircraft. There is a notepad file containing the fightsim entries to add to your aircraft.cfg.
Ensure that you renumber the 3 new enties so that they follow in sequence with those you already have
If you are flying a different aircraft version please make sure it is a military textured aircraft and make sure your Swift model set contains as a minimum one military texture and the Flight Replicas Ai C47 formation aircraft.
Refer to the Swift usage text file for further information

8.
Images:
Within the images folder are several pictures of the operation showing the formations both in the air and on the ground. You will also see some images taken at the airfields so for those who take the effort to also download and install the scenery object slibrary packages you will see the resemblance to the ww2 images in the scenery I created.

9.
Effects:
Within the effects folder you will find a group of .fx files that will add the flak, tracer, explosions, paratroopers etc..
Copy the .fx files to your effects folder of your simulator software.
Copy the .bmp texture files contained in the effects/texture folder to your effects/texture folder of your simulator software.

10.
Documentation:
The documentation folder contains instructions for the 2 sessions as well as a historical background of the event and other informative snippets of information. Please try to ensure that you read all of them to get a better understanding of why Varsity took place, the risks involved, the events of the day and the cost in human lives and suffering.

11.
If you have any queries, either email me or post on the forums in the Varsity event section so that you can receive a quick response. I can make myself available most days around 15:00z or 21:00z on TS3 to assist with technical queries.

There is a 4th download, far larger than the others, which includes all of the scenery libraries I have used in populating the 10 sceneries with objects such as static aircraft, vehicles, tents, aircrew, buildings etc.. These extra library objects bring the airfields to life and make them resemble what a WW2 Troop carrier base would have looked like in France at this time. They are optional however I think if you download them and put them into your addon scenery folder and activate them in your scenery library you will get a much better immersion at the airfields.

All of these provided files, many of which have been used before, have been tested on FSX and all versions of P3D and have caused no problems.

An event of this magnitude and complexity could not have been made ready without assistance. Therefore I would like to personally state here my thanks to the following individuals for their patience, support, technical assistance and testing over the past 4 months. Without their time and perseverance the sceneries, routings and effects could not have been completed.

1026 Johann 2546 Roger 0309 Andy 1056 Paul 0662 Sherman

Special thanks must go to Roger 2546 for joining me to test sceneries, timings and effects as well as to Andy for the use of the FTP server and creating the web page for everyone to avail themselves of the files and documents.

And finally, a thanks to you who are taking the trouble to install the various files, some small but some large, and taking the time and effort to prepare for a large spectacle to commemorate the 76th anniversary of operation Varsity, which was the largest single day airborne operation in history.

We could see as many as 20+ pilots, covering 4 different simulator software types, and hopefully you will all come away with a better appreciation of that period of history and of the courage and skills of the aircraft, power pilots and glider pilots alike, who flew low and slow through hell to deliver allied troops on the eastern side of the river Rhine.

Come and fly history!
